Wrinkle Reducers: The Basics
How DOES it works?
A neuromodulator is a substance that affects the way a nerve receptor functions. Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxic protein which prevents the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from the neuromuscular junction. This mechanism of action prevents muscles from contracting, thereby reducing or preventing the formation of wrinkles.
what to expect during your appointment
For a newbie, a Botox appointment usually runs around 30 minutes. This gives us plenty of time to discuss your goals and assess your face during movement or expression. The treatment area is thoroughly cleansed prior to the procedure. Using a very small needle, a series of injections are carried out. Most patients have minimal to no discomfort. They often describe the discomfort as a “small pinch.”
what to expect after your appointment
After treatment you may notice some small bumps which will resolve within 10-15 minutes. Typically by the time you have made it back to your car you look as though you have not had anything done. You are welcome to reapply your makeup and go about your day as you would like.
Since small needles are used during treatment, it is not uncommon to see bruising. Most bruises are mild and can be covered up with makeup.
It can take up to two weeks for Botox to fully “kick in.” Immediately, you will not notice a difference, however over the next few days you may note a reduction in your muscular movement.
It is not uncommon for your provider to ask you to come back for a follow up two weeks after your treatment. During this follow up appointment, small tweaks can be made as desired.
NEUROMODULATORS 101
One of the most common cosmetic procedures performed is wrinkle reducing injections, commonly called Botox. Botox is the brand name of a neuromodulator that was the first to the market in 2002. There are now three other FDA approved neuromodulators in the United States: Dysport, Xeomin and Jeuveau.
The active ingredients in all these neuromodulators is botulinum toxin. These products come as a powder which is reconstituted (or mixed) prior to usage. The liquid is measured in “units” and injected into specific muscles in the face or body. It is important to note that the “units” from neuromodulators are not interchangeable. Although any of these products can be used as a wrinkle reducers, I will refer to them collectively as Botox in this blog.
will my WRINKLES GO AWAY completely?
Short answer is Botox does not erase wrinkles! Since Botox works at the neuromuscular junction and on muscular function, your lines will not disappear straight away. If you have lines or wrinkles at rest, they will most likely soften, but not resolve with treatment. Having consistent treatments (every 3-4 months) can help these lines continue to soften and eventually disappear.
WHO SHOULD GET BOTOX TREATMENTS?
It is a misconception that Botox treatments are only for those who have wrinkles. Botox is one of my favorite preventative treatments and it is not uncommon to start in your 20’s or 30’s. If we can prevent those lines from ever forming then you don’t have to worry about trying to erase them when you are older.
HOW LONG DO RESULTS LAST?
The results of Botox are temporary. Typically, patients desire treatment every 3-4 months to maintain their results.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Botox pricing can vary depending on your location. I typically don’t advise going with the cheapest person in town as this is a medical procedure. Treatment typically ranges from $250 - $650 depending on the areas involved.
It is always advisable to research your provider. Ask how often they perform the treatment and their education and background.
There are reward programs offered by Allergan (Botox) and Galderma (Dysport) which can save you money for future treatments.
